Deepak Chopra was interviewed on CBC Radio a little while ago about the controversial Paramount movie, The Love Guru, starring Mike Myers.
In that interview Chopra suggested that Hindus should not overreact to Myers’ brand of humor, which, he said, operates on the first and second chakra levels.
Chopra said that only a few “Hindu Fundamentalists” were offended, implying that the number of offended Hindus was relatively small compared to all Hindus.
And protesting the movie, Chopra claimed, will only make more people want to go and see it.
Chopra also said that he doesn’t get offended by things any more:
If your faith can be shaken by a joke then it’s another cover up for insecurity. I mean, come on, if you can’t take a joke that doesn’t say much about your faith.” » Q: The Podcast Monday June 23, 2008
Hindus offended by the film, however, have not given up on their worldwide campaign.
Here are some of the most recent headlines:
- Hindus upset over France giving “The Love Guru” a “U” rating and call for movie’s boycott
- Hindus give Ireland-wide boycott call against “The Love Guru” movie
- Hindus want a Hinduism video and booklet to be included with “The Love Guru” DVD
- Hindus give UK-wide boycott call against ‘The Love Guru’ movie
- Hindus upset over inability to appeal against Finland Film Board’s rating of “The Love Guru”
- Boycott call of “The Love Guru” movie gathers strength in Australia
- Protesting Hindus cannot appeal against Singapore Censors rating of “The Love Guru”

I am hindu and i am offended, look around not only Hindu’s even others are offended too,Google it!
I am shocked a “spiritual “man like you thinks loveguru is just a joke.

I would like to request all Hindus worldover to be alert and protest against the biggest enemy of our religion ” Deepak Chopra”. How dare he says its just a joke!
Would he have the same courage to talk about “Danish Cartoons” and say it is just a joke, probably he wouldn’t be alive.

You say the sacred concept of Guru is not shaken in the film. Come on be realistic. Why chose a subject in which Hindus get hurt under the pretext it’s a joke. Any devout Hindu will go against you.

Hindu sacred gods and Goddesses have always been ridiculed by many. even so called Hindus enjoy getting their faith maligned by other religious wolves. What this self styled D Chopra is commenting reeks of arrogance and hatred for his own nation of origin. He will join the criticism if similar movies are made spoiling the image of Buddha, Jesus or Prophet. Whereas Myers and M.F. Hussain will go scot free even after demeaning Hindu religion. The Hindu tolerance has taken its toll. Ram Sethu and Holy Ganges are facing the brunt of such hatred within India. There are monsters in the form of Reddy (CM of AP), Karunanidhi (CM of TN) and the great Catholic Lady who rules our Nation by manipulating our PM and implementing anti Hindu policies in our great land. Mysore temples are being robbed by state itself to fund Haj pilgrimage.
You are right Mr. Deepak Chopra, so much is being done against Hinduism that Love Guru really appears to be a non issue and can be ignored.

First of all Deepak Chopra needs to get his basics right. What accordingly to him is faith?? You cannot have faith in Guru and joke about the same Guru, this is total hypocrisy! Deepak Chopra is afraid of going against this movie hence finds it easier to cover up the truth rather than fight against adharma. Maybe he ought to introspect about his own insecurity rather than pointing fingers at devout Hindus.

I am wondering whether Mike Myers and Deepak Chopra would be producing a movie poking fun at Christianity and Islam, and then term outbursts of followers of those religions as ’shaken faith’, ‘fundamentalism’, etc!!

Deepak Chopra, whom you are calling the Hindu Fundamentalists. The people who have posted the comments against Love Guru Movie are the ones who respect the religious ethos, who are practising spirituality irrespective of religion to discover the true love in their hearts. They are not against the society, social values or righteous principles rather committed to establish the righteousness in the universe. These people in truth represent millions of Hindus across the world. Just by being born as a Hindu is not sufficient, one needs to understand what really Hinduism stands for and live with those ideals every breadth of his life. How can you ridicule the word Guru (the guiding principle of God, the Universal Creator) which is the breadth of everyone’s life, which continuously stands beside one, and lift that being from the worldly ignorance to a spiritual way of life. You are really scared that by voicing against this unrighteous movie, your fame will gets tarnished, hence you do not have the guts to raise your voice and you are supporting adharma. Introspect going beyond your intellect surrendering to the holy feet of the Universal Creator, you will know what grave sin you are committing by supporting this movie.

I am extremely disappointed in Deepak Chopra for supporting this outrageous movie. Mr. Deepak Chopra may not have been offended but he obviously doesn’t seem to be concerned with what hundreds of thousands of Hindus and Buddhists believes. I guess his concerns are geared to his new book “Why is God Laughing,” forwarded by Mike Myers; of course this explains his bias sentiments. In my opinion the movie “The Love Guru” was stupid comedy, not even funny and mocked the Hindu religion. Although I’m not of the Hindu faith I’m strongly against the condemning of any religion or religious institutions. Just to inform you at Paramount Pictures and Mr. Deepak Chopra we in New York are strongly disheartened and annoyed by your publication of this movie. Furthermore, I’ve chosen to end my purchases of any of Deepak Chopra’s books in the future and will no longer support his causes.

The only impression i got from this movie was that it is teaching people how to look INWARD and think at a higher level.
I highly disagree with anyone who claims he is mocking or making fun.
What Mike is doing here is aiming for the people who know nothing about meditation or chakra elevation (the masses). And if we cant get people to realize love is the only cure for everything then Mike will take it into his own hands and do it subconsciously. Even if that means through disgusting and crazy humor.
If you notice, almost every action in this movie has a meaning behind it.
This movie, I believe, is about teaching… not mocking. Watch the movie again without your preconceived bias thoughts and LISTEN to the message he is presenting.

hmmmm,
Did any of you see the special features? Mike Meyers created a movie about two his greatest passions and that was Hockey and Eastern Philosophy.
But honestly, if you are a true believe in peace you will not be offended over someone elses opinions. Your faith should be so concrete that the actions of thoughts of another man shouldn’t be able to bring you down or lower your positive energy.
I personally liked the movie. It wasn’t very funny, but his way of bringing out different points on how people should live life was amazing. I’ve been studying eastern philosophy for years as will as many other things to help elevate consciousness and increase ones spirituality to understand that “we are all one”.
You have to understand that he brought the understanding to the west with comedy but it was seen on a mass scale since it was a movie released in movie theaters. People these days are easily distracted, easily bored, so whats the best way to teach someone then to keep their attention focused on you through laughter.
Personally this movie does point out how we should love, and how we need to change our negative thought patterns to those of love, unity, and positiveness.
In fact, I haven’t heard of Chopra before but since the movie i’ve been researching his books and already ordered some.
