Ever-since the “separation of church and State”, there has been a mindset that there needs to be a division between all spiritual matters and government and business. I believe this to be a serious mistake if not the primary reason for the lack of business success for the majority of faith based believers. If you understand that God is who He says He is, then everything is spiritual, and to approach business from any other stand-point is therefore ill advised.

If you are not a person who believes, this will probably not make sense to you. However if you are a person of faith and have been deceived into believing that there is no place for your spirituality in your business- listen up!

Maybe the Lord is speaking to you today.

First off- let us not confuse the present day concept of ‘religion’ with spirituality or faith. There is not necessarily a connection. Now that folks, is a discussion that would merit and entire book on its own merits. For now, suffice to say that in this discussion concerning the integration of your spiritual life with your business life. How you came to believe, the label associated with your chosen denomination, are all of no significance.

The only thing that matters for this discussion is that if you are a believing person who tries to divorce your business from your spirituality, you are making a big mistake. Why would you do that anyway? Do you imagine for a moment that you are better equipped alone to do the work necessary for success in business?

Rather than provide you with a long dissertation using Scripture references to substantiate this position, I propose a more simple action oriented approach.

Here is a suggested course of action. For the next 30 days, make a commitment to accept the possibility that everything could in fact be spiritual.

Make the decision that you will do the following things every day for 30 days regardless of how you feel about the issues of spirituality and business and regardless of what conventional wisdom tells you is correct.

Start and finish each day with some ‘quiet time’ with just you and the Creator

Set your goals by writing them down in the present tense as though you have already achieved them, but.. always start with the phrase ‘If God will’

Example: “It is January 1st 2010 and if God will, I am so grateful that we generated x-amount of $ in December of 2009.

Pray about every business decision you make before you make the decision. Don’t know how to pray? It is not a difficult thing- just start to talk to the Lord as though He is actually right there in the room with you- as He is!

Example: “Now Lord, I have to decide today about whether to do A,b or C. Guide me by the direction of your Spirit which is the right decision to make”.

You know how business people talk about ‘gut feel’. When you are guided by the Spirit of God, you will have a prompting in you- so be receptive and act.

Put yourself in a state of gratitude. Keep reminding yourself of how fortunate you are to be alive, to have hope and opportunity, look to see the good side of things, and thank God for what you have. Start a ‘gratitude book’ and write in it each day at least one thing that you are grateful for.

Be a giver.

Give freely of your time, talent and treasure. Give 10% of your income, these are the ‘first fruits’ that God talks about. Ask God where to give it- He will direct you. There is so much need in the world, you will never be short of options. This concept of giving is the universal law of ’sowing and reaping’ Just give because you can- don’t expect to get anything back and watch what happens.

So there it is ..a simple formula to follow for 30 days. If you do it, there are likely to be some dramatic changes in your business…

Give at least 10% of your income to needs God directs your attention to.

With new funding from India, Oscar winner Steven Spielberg is ready to move ahead with production and we all shall be able to see six-plus foot invisible rabbit “Harvey” in the near future.

Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed says that they were glad to see the legendary director back in filmmaking. Spielberg has not reportedly produced after Transformers since separating from Paramount Pictures. Deal with India’s Reliance on Monday breathed life back into Spielberg’s dormant DreamWorks Studios and he can now start directing “Harvey”.

Spielberg’s directorial project “Harvey” is remake of Oscar winner James Stewart (The Philadelphia Story) starring 1950 film based on Mary Chase Pulitzer Prize-winning play, about amiable and eccentric bachelor Elwood P. Dowd and his friendship with imaginary Harvey. Oscar nominated Henry Koster (The Bishop’s Wife) directed the 1950 Harvey, which won an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

It is reportedly a co-venture between the new DreamWorks, Disney and 20th Century Fox. Spielberg and Don Gregory (Fire in the Dark) will be the producers. While casting and pre-production is expected to begin immediately, the production will begin in early 2010.

As Oscar winner Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) has reportedly said no to the role of the polite Dowd, Spielberg will be looking for another likable top-notch leading actor who can convincingly talk to the invisible rabbit.

I remember both the subtle whisperings of my soul and the more jolting cosmic two by fours over the head, metaphysically speaking, that initiated my process of awakening to my life’s purpose. And while this process continues (generally, in a more gentle way), I revel in the profound mystery of its unfoldment and am grateful that it has led me to this moment in time.

You and I have reached an exciting juncture in our collective evolution where fully realizing the purpose of our human experience is a distinct possibility. As we embrace this possibility, we have been guided to do work (both inner and outer) that forwards the process of our own awakening and helps others awaken – healing or wellness work. And while the healing arts or wellness professions cover a breadth of different modalities, their collective purpose is the same: to awaken us to our intrinsic wholeness, the purpose of each individual life.

Your Life’s Purpose and Your Business

In Eckhart Tolle’s book, A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, he defines awakening as the process of consciousness shifting to a state where thinking and awareness separate. He says that your inner purpose, which concerns being, is to awaken and this is primary. Your outer purpose, which concerns doing, is secondary.

These key concepts underpin inspired business planning and relate directly to the first step of the process, which is to discern the higher purpose of your business. If you’re not focussed primarily on your inner purpose (to awaken), then you will not be connected to the higher purpose of your business. And, consequently, your outer purpose (your business) will be out of alignment with your inner purpose. In other words, you will operate your business from the consciousness of your ego (your conditioned, limited mind), rather than the consciousness of your awakening self.

Discerning the Higher Purpose of Your Business

“Finding and living in alignment with the inner purpose is the foundation for fulfilling your outer purpose. It is the basis for true success.”

As you continue to focus on your inner purpose, the higher purpose of your business will become clearer and more rooted in your consciousness. You will experience and facilitate awakening through your work.

While this is the broader, higher purpose of your business, you may also start to discern aspects that are more specific. You may feel called to facilitate awakening through a particular life area and/or with a particular group of people. For example, as I’ve focused on my inner purpose, I’ve discerned that the specific, higher purpose of my business is to model and facilitate awakening with healers/wellness professionals through money and all forms of prosperity, as expressed primarily through business.

Your business’s higher purpose may not include such specific aspects right now or they may emerge, change or diversify over time. Also, you may feel that you already have much clarity and connection with your business’s higher purpose. Nevertheless, to deepen this connection and invite further clarity, consider asking yourself these questions and journaling your responses:

- What do I think is the primary purpose of my life?

- How does my life purpose relate to the higher purpose of my business?

- How would I describe the higher purpose of my business?

- What specific life areas relate to the higher purpose of my business?

- What specific groups of people relate to the higher purpose of my business?

Discerning and deepening your connection with your business’s higher purpose is the first, ongoing step of the inspired business planning process, and it will fortify all subsequent steps. As you focus on fulfilling this purpose, immense spiritual power will infuse your business, uniting your intentions and objectives with the evolutionary impulse of universal consciousness.

Sony Corporation has agreed to look into the issue of objections of Hindus against their newly released controversial “Hanuman: Boy Warrior” video game for PlayStation2.

Replying to the communiqué of Bhavna Shinde of Forum for Hindu Awakening, Keita Sanekata of Sony Electronics Inc wrote, “We will review this issue, and get back to you as soon as possible.”

Advancing the protest spearheaded by acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, Shinde earlier wrote Sanekata to “look into withdrawing this game and publishing an apology, so as to prevent further denigration of our Deity Sree Hanuman and intensifying of our protests”.

Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, had earlier urged Sony Corporation to withdraw the “Hanuman: Boy Warrior” video game, saying it trivializes the highly revered deity of Hinduism.

Shinde wrote, “Using a sacred figure from Hinduism, namely, the Hindus’ revered Deity, Sree Hanuman, as a character in a video game is highly objectionable to us Hindus worldwide… As an ethical corporation, Sony is expected to treat with respect the objects and concepts held sacred by the one-billion-strong Hindu community.”

Many other Hindu leaders/groups world over have joined the protest, including

Vamsi Krishna of Sanatan Sanstha based in Australia; Hindu Janajagruti Samiti headquartered in India; Jawahar L. Khurana, Chairperson of Hindu Alliance of India; Lila D. Sharma, President of India Heritage Panel; Dharam Loonaa, Executive Director of Universal Society of Hinduism; and Rakesh Nagpal, General Secretary of Shri Ramayan Pracharini Sabha; urging Sony for urgent withdrawal of “Hanuman: Boy Warrior” video game.

Lord Hanuman is greatly revered and his worship is very popular among Hindus and there are numerous temples dedicated to him. Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents. Sony, with Howard Stringer as Chairman, is one of the most comprehensive entertainment companies in the world.

Intensifying the protest campaign against the upcoming Hollywood movie “The Love Guru”, Hindus have floated an online signature drive.

Advancing the movement launched by acclaimed Hindu leader Rajan Zed, this signature drive sends protest e-mails to Motion Picture Association of America, Paramount Pictures (presenters of “The Love Guru”), National Association of Theatre Owners, Indian Censor Board, and other authorities across the world. When someone registers for this drive, it automatically sends protest mail to these organizations.

“…In this film, the sacred relationship between Guru and disciple has been ridiculed…The parody on Gurus will contribute to the misunderstanding about the sacred concept of the ‘Guru’…”, the protest message says.

First day of this campaign registered about 2,500 protesters, according to Bhavna Shinde, Hindu leader affiliated with this campaign.

Meanwhile, furthering the drive pioneered by Indo-American leader Rajan Zed, various organizations and leaders have been coming out expressing concern about the possibility of “The Love Guru” hurting the sentiments of Hindus worldwide and urging filmmakers to be more responsible when handling faith related subjects. Zed has been saying that from the information available about the movie, it appears to be lampooning Hinduism and Hindus and using Hindu terms frivolously. Various Hindu, Catholic, Presbyterian, Jewish, Native American, Methodist, Buddhist, youth, film, spiritual/religious, music, yoga, civil rights, etc., leaders have already issued statements in support of this cause espoused by Rajan Zed.

On the other hand, Hindu groups have recently been approaching film distributors associations, exhibitors groups, regulatory bodies, government ministries, theater owners, etc., in various parts of the world urging them not to distribute/screen “The Love Guru” till Paramount Pictures makes necessary changes to it. 

Paramount Pictures, through its Senior Vice President National Publicity, Jessica Rovins, has earlier stated, “It is our full intention to screen the film for Rajan Zed and other Hindu leaders in the U.S. once we have a finished print.”

It may be recalled here that advance screenings of Mel Gibson’s 2004 movie “The Passion of the Christ” were held for clergy and others.

“The Love Guru”; a comedy starring Mike Myers (of Austin Powers fame, who is also the co-writer and co-producer), Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Ben Kingsley; and directed by Marco Schnabel; is set to release on June 20 next. In it Myers, an American, raised in an ashram in India, moves back to US as Guru Pitka to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality.

Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion followers. Moksha (liberation) is the ultimate goal of Hinduism.

On the protest of Hindu groups, Beliefnet, the largest spiritual website, has agreed to post an article explaining their viewpoint about the upcoming Hollywood movie “The Love Guru” alongside promotional material of movie, which Hindus say lampoons their religion.

Advancing the movement launched by acclaimed Hindu leader Rajan Zed, Hindu groups had earlier asked Beliefnet to stop promoting “The Love Guru”, which they say “hurts the Hindu and spiritual community”.

Michael Kress, Managing Editor of Beliefnet, in a communiqué to Bhavna Shinde, who represents Hindu Janjagruti Samiti and Sanatan Society for Scientific Spirituality, said, “We hope that by featuring this opinion alongside others, our readers can be better informed about the issues you are raising and decide for themselves what to believe and how to act in this case.” 

Shinde in a communiqué to Beliefnet had earlier said, “…we are appalled that a well-respected spiritual website like Beliefnet is openly promoting this movie that hurts the Hindu and spiritual community, contradicting Beliefnet’s published mission statement…”

“Protesting the denigrating content of ‘The Love Guru’ and Beliefnet’s promoting it”, Shinde further said, “…we urge Beliefnet to stop promoting ‘The Love Guru’ movie, till Paramount has made necessary changes to the movie, so that it will not hurt the feelings of the worldwide spiritual and Hindu community. This will also ensure continued respect from the Hindu and spiritual for Beliefnet as a truly spiritual website, in accordance with its mission statement.” 

Beliefnet lists its mission as ” to help people like you find, and walk, a spiritual path that will bring comfort, hope, clarity, strength, and happiness”. “Our only agenda is to help you meet your spiritual goals”, its website says.

Talking about the Beliefnet and Paramount partnership on ‘The Love Guru’ movie, the Beliefnet website said, “The features on this page were created as part of a collaboration between Beliefnet and Paramount Pictures. Beliefnet editors and Paramount officials jointly determined the design and content of this page,” and also states, “Beliefnet and Paramount explore the movie ‘The Love Guru’”. It also includes trailer of the movie. “Ask the Love Guru a Question” was at number four on the Most Emailed Articles list of Beliefnet website.

Launched in 1999, Beliefnet is part of the Fox Entertainment Group, which is a division of News Corporation. Steven Waldman is the President and Editor-in-Chief. Stated to be the largest online community for spirituality and inspiration, Beliefnet claims about three million unique visitors each month and a daily email newsletter readership of nearly 11 million subscribers. It has partnership with Time magazine, ABC News, etc.

“…If the trailer is an indicator of the content of the movie…then we feel that this movie is most likely to hurt the sentiments of seekers from various spiritual paths…it will hurt the religious sentiments of millions of Hindus worldwide, who hold the ‘Guru-disciple’ relationship as sacred…we are supporting Rajan Zed’s protest against the denigration…Poking fun is one thing, but if it creates a sense of belittling other’s faith, then it is wrong,” communiqués stressed.

I have not seen the trailer or the movie, but I can guess that it satirizes ‘gurus on the make’. I doubt I would find it funny. Nevertheless, we are not in a position to take action you recommend …we are a trade association, and we cannot interfere with the decisions of our members regarding what movies or trailers to play…”

Ilona Cheshire, Press Officer of prestigious British Film Institute (BFI), wrote in her reply, “Please rest assured that the BFI will not be screening this title nor will be involved with a possible release of it.” J.L. Green, Chief Assistant (Policy) to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), replying the communiqué, said, “The BBFC is sympathetic to your concerns…”

Primitivo Rodriguez-Gordillo, President of Spain based Sociedad de Empresarios de Cine de España (SECIES), informed that the letter sent by Hindu groups was distributed among their members and “we hope their act conveniently”.

A prominent Jewish Rabbi, Elizabeth W. Beyer of Nevada (USA), has called for boycott of  “The Love Guru” because it “…lampoons Hinduism, mocks Ashram life and Hindu philosophy…” and asking “who laughs at religious practices”.

The broader aim of worldwide Hindu protests against upcoming Hollywood movie “The Love Guru” is to protect the interests of various minorities and ethnicities of the world and save them from future ridicule, Rajan Zed, acclaimed Hindu leader who is spearheading these protests, said in a statement from Nevada (USA) today.

“Through these protests, we are attempting to safeguard the rights and respect of all minorities including Hindus and including ‘mind-body’ guy Deepak Chopra who makes a living by repackaging Hindu concepts, terminology, and products and who is unsuccessfully trying to defend this apparent mockery and in the process creating more confusion,” Rajan Zed said. 

Everyone is a minority in some place and in some sense in this world and deserves to be respected, Zed stressed.

Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion followers and should not be taken lightly. Filmmakers should be very responsible when handling faith related subjects because movies being a powerful communication medium have far reaching effects, Zed said.

Hindus world over are deeply concerned about the apparent denigration of their traditions by this movie portrayal of Hindu characters like buffoons and parody of yoga, which is one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy. In Hindu tradition, guru is sacred and associated with the divine and leads disciples from darkness to light; and guru-disciple relationship is at the heart of Hindu tradition, Zed clarified.

“We hope that Paramount Pictures, presenters of ‘The Love Guru’, will be positively responsive to our concerns which we point out at the pre-screening of the movie promised by Paramount, and be prepared to make amends if requested”, Rajan Zed said.

Comedy should make everybody smile and should not come at the expense of ridiculing others’ faith and spreading misinformation, he said and added that besides Hindus, leaders of various other faith traditions have come out in support of the protest.

Hindus have urged the Viacom and its brand Paramount Pictures to post a study- guide about Hinduism and guru tradition on their websites and place it in movie theaters worldwide to undo the damage done by their upcoming Hollywood movie “The Love Guru”. 

Advancing the movement launched by acclaimed Hindu leader Rajan Zed; Bhavna Shinde, representing Hindu Janjagruti Samiti and Sanatan Society for Scientific Spirituality, in a communiqué to Paramount Pictures today, mentioned the protests spearheaded by Zed and supported by the Hindu and spiritual community worldwide, and added, “…We also feel that the parody on Gurus will contribute to the misunderstanding about the sacred concept of the ‘Guru’…”

Shinde urged Viacom and Paramount to immediately issue a study guide about Hinduism and the sacred tradition/role of the ‘Guru’ confirming to Hindu scriptures, post it on the official websites of Viacom and Paramount and ‘The Love Guru’, and make it available free of cost in printed form at the movie theaters worldwide.

She further said, “This guide should also offer the viewers a framework in which to see the film, so that the viewers do not carry any misconceptions about Hinduism and that the characters portrayed in this movie are in no way depicting authentic Gurus from the Hindu and spiritual tradition.”

“The Love Guru”; a comedy starring Mike Myers (of Austin Powers fame, who is also the co-writer and co-producer), Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Ben Kingsley; and directed by Marco Schnabel; is set to release on June 20 next. In it Myers, an American, raised in an ashram in India, moves back to US as Guru Pitka to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality.
