Alternative energy is defined as energy that comes from a natural source and is renewable or naturally occurring. Alternative energy typically does not produce pollution and comes from such sources as the sun, wind, and water.

There have been many recent innovations to alternative energy as a result of expanding alternative energy technologies.

Alternative energy technologies have made it possible to do much more research on how to use the alternative energy sources that we have more effectively to generate the most power out of the various sources.

Alternative energy technologies have also been instrumental in discovering new ways to produce heating fuels, such as bio-diesel, methanol, and ethanol from bio-mass for energy consumption.

It is imperative that companies who are dedicated to alternative energy options continue to develop their alternative energy technologies to keep up with the demand to make alternative energy more readily accessible to a larger amount of people as the dwindling supply of fossil fuels and concerns over our dependence on foreign oils drives many more people towards considering alternative energy sources.

In recent years alternative energy technologies have propelled bio-mass and bio-deisel into the fore front of the alternative energy movement. Biotechnology has become an extremely important area of research and development as a result of the record high gas and heating fuel prices.

Biomass is organic material made from plants or animals that originates from agricultural and forestry residue as well as municipal and industrial wastes and terrestrial and aquatic crops. Through the use of alternative energy technologies bio-mass has been able to be transferred into usable fules such as methane, ethanol, dio-deisel, methanol and biocrude.

These products are viable and readily available alternatives to pertroleum and gasoline. Through the use of alternative energy technologies bio-mass has also been found to be a source of biopower. Biopower uses biomass to produce electricity using alternative energy technologies such as direct firing, co-firing, gasification, pyrolysis, and anaerobic digestion.

The direct firing method biomass is burned to produce steam. The steam drives a turbine that turns a generator to convert power into electricity. Without alternative energy technologies it would be much more difficult to develop new ways to use the resources that are available naturally.

Alternative energy technologies also make it possible to discover new ways to develop alternative energy and make it more user friendly and efficient in usage and installation.

Alternative energy technologies truly are changing the face of the alternative energy movement and creating more innovative ways to use natural resources as well as providing new products that rely on alternative energy as their source of power.

By Knight Pierce Hirst

May 20, 2009 was a first. Astronauts aboard the space station drank water recycled from urine, sweat and water condensation from exhaled air. The urine recycling system is especially needed for outposts on the Moon and Mars, but it will also save NASA money by not having to ship as much water to the space station. The system’s ability to make about 6 gallons of water in about 6 hours will become even more important when the space station expands from 3 to 6 people. Today if you’re an astronaut, “urine” a unique group.

Farmers whose microchipped plants send text messages to the farmers’ cell phones asking for water are in a unique group. The thin sensor, which is smaller than a postage stamp, attaches to plant leaves like a clip-on earring. Using these sensors in the western U.S. to conserve water and the electricity needed to pump water across fields could save farmers hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly. The original “plant cell phone” was developed by NASA to reduce time and supplies needed to grow crops in space. Today’s version still needs a power source, but future sensors could have solar panels as technology grows too.

As technology grows, a New York company may have made the most significant change in publishing since Guttenberg started printing more than 500 years ago. “On Demand Books” has installed a trial machine in a London bookstore. Containing 500,000 digitally saved titles and another 500,000 expected in 3 months, the printer runs at about 100 pages a minute, pages are stuck and bound together and a book is turned out. Although the machine costs $175,000, books average $15 and will enable bookstores to compete with Internet stores and electronic books. Although it’s called the “Espresso”, this machine grinds out books.

To divert fishing and diving from natural reefs, the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a retired Navy warship, ground to a halt when it was sunk in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The $8.6 million project is the world’s second-largest, artificial reef. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates the ship’s lifespan to be at least 100 years at 40-140 feet below water, providing a stable habitat for many fish species and exciting fishing and diving opportunities for residents and visitors. Because the Vandenberg reef is expected to increase spending in Monroe County by $7.5 million annually, their ship’s come in.

June 25, 2009

When we think about space travel and activities in space, two general categories may come to mind: the conventional and unconventional.

In some ways, these two categories seem to overlap when it comes to certain scientific studies and speculation.

In the conventional category, we often first think of NASA – the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

A long series of NASA projects and endeavors over the decades has been followed closely by many Americans and people around the world.

Private companies with communications satellites in Earth orbit also come to mind when talking about conventional space activities. And now, some companies are involved in Earth-to-orbit space planes, orbiting space stations or habitats and a variety of other commercial and scientific space activities.

Unconventional space-related ideas and discussions may include theories about UFOs and intelligent visitors from other worlds.

There is also speculation that secret U.S. space activities might be much more advanced than what appears on the surface in NASA missions.

COMMON DENOMINATORS

What are useful and constructive ways to reconcile and integrate the conventional and unconventional elements of our perceptions about, and the realities of space-related operations?

It is probably fundamental to accept the fact that there are U.S. space activities that are secret and will remain secret. It is likely that many advanced technologies, aircraft and spacecraft have been developed and these will remain classified.

The idea that the U.S. might have advanced aircraft and spacecraft is not much of a stretch. In fact, if we see a UFO, it might be one of ours.

When we take this a step further in a certain direction – such as ideas about the integration of extraterrestrial technology and knowledge in secret space programs – we seem to be firmly on the unconventional wavelength and really thinking outside the box.

It may be helpful to remember that even without advanced knowledge from exotic visitors, our own human scientific knowledge, including in the aerospace field, is most likely decades ahead of where the general public thinks it is.

Advanced technologies and knowledge might be common denominators that link speculation about things like UFOs and advanced secret U.S. space activities with more conventional space projects.

These kinds of discussions touch on issues such as anti-gravity technologies and exotic methods of space travel and propulsion.

Further ideas from the unconventional realm include theories about multiple dimensions and a multiverse around us, as well as mysterious energies and forces that we do not understand.

Our scientific understanding about gravity, dark energy, wormholes, zero point energy and similar phenomena appears to be making progress, but is still quite incomplete.

Investigations into these areas of study also seem to straddle the conventional and unconventional in certain ways.

NEW ENDEAVORS

The emergence of commercial space enterprises by private companies is sure to add exciting and innovative new aspects to our perceptions about space.

One day soon we may be able to buy a ticket to depart from a commercial spaceport on a space plane that will take us into that magical area where Earth’s atmosphere merges with space.
In addition, scientists and others may be able to stay aboard commercial space stations or habitats in Earth’s orbit for weeks or months.

The evolution of these and similar efforts will likely provide valuable spin-off benefits for many aspects of our technological and economic development.

Diverse kinds of space activities by governments and private industry will probably yield all sorts of new knowledge, some of which we might have difficulty wrapping our minds around.

Some of this new understanding might have to do with the human race, human consciousness and the human condition on Earth.

Other knowledge might be gained about the possibility of intelligent civilizations from elsewhere in our galaxy or even further away.

Or, we may learn about surprising phenomena and realities very close to home.
