Coffee lovers? Read this…

Coffee is my only drug. Thank God it’s cheap. I’ve tried going off and generally have felt like half a person when doing so. Or, by way of analogy, a house with the top floor missing.

However, this article got me thinking. Maybe I’ll intersperse a little more water among cups.

But I found it interesting, and believe it has enough stand-alone informational content to qualify for earthpages’ non-commercial status. What Professions Drink the Most Coffee?

We all love to drink our coffee, lots and lots of coffee; however, there are certain industries that consume lots more coffee than others. Some industries are notorious for consuming coffee like it is water. So what are they?

  1. Journalists and other media staff
  2. Law officials (policemen)
  3. Teachers
  4. Plumbers and other trade workers
  5. Nurses and other medical professionals (doctors)
  6. Corporate executives
  7. Telesales professionals
  8. IT technical support
  9. Retail employees

10. Drivers (truck drivers, semi-trucks, etc)

So why do journalists and other reporters drink so much coffee? Imagine walking into a newsroom, you might see a large amount of grizzled journalists hunched over keyboards, neckties slightly loosened, sleeves rolled up, maybe a cigar, and a large mug of Joe. Well, newsrooms look rather different than that but you would be correct about the latter part. According to a new survey, Pressat, they surveyed a wide variety of industries and found that journalists drink the most coffee.

85 percent of the professionals, across all the industries, said that they consume at least three cups of coffee per day. Believe it or not, K-Cup coffee has played a big role in the amount of coffee consumed. Having three cups of coffee per day is well beyond the recommended 200 milligrams per day. The professionals in the high-stress jobs, like the ones in that list of 10, drink the most coffee.

It seems that consuming coffee while on the clock is a necessity in today’s professional world. Is it possible that people are being stretched beyond capacity and even working late or early will push professionals to drink more coffee?

70 percent of the people surveyed in this study believe that if they cut their coffee consumption, then their job performance will suffer; whether they cut the coffee out completely or reduce it, they believe quality will decrease. Men turned out to drink a bit more coffee than the women in the study, a whole 5 percent more coffee.

Looking at the list, you can see why coffee is a huge part of their lives. One would even think that medical professionals would consume the most; one may also be surprised to not find military on the list.

Your Behavior Is Your Belief

Your behavior IS your belief. Ouch! Most folks don’t want that to be true when they first hear it. How about you?

I was speaking at a conference and it was lunchtime. I was sitting at a table of participants and we shared a lovely meal. The coffee was served and we were relaxing, I thought.

The woman next to me leaned in and whispered,

“I know coffee is not good for me and I don’t really drink coffee. I need a pick-me-up and just thought this was a special occasion.” She was almost apologetic. I whispered back and affirmed,

“You’re a coffee drinker.” She protested mightily.

“Oh, no, I’m really not!” I smiled and told her that indeed she was a coffee drinker as she was indeed drinking coffee!

Her behavior was her belief. Coffee drinkers drink coffee. Non-coffee drinkers do not. It’s that simple. Now, a few basic things were true aside from her behavior:

• I have no feelings, thoughts or judgments about whether or not a human being and coffee are a healthy combination. Every body is different. It was her projection that, because she thought she ought not to be drinking coffee, I shared her opinion.

• She was endeavoring to be pre-emptive and pro-active. IF, by any chance, I did care about her drinking coffee, she was going to set me straight about her usual behavior and, hopefully, remove any thoughts I might have about her caring about her health, knowing the effects of caffeine, or questioning her self-discipline.

• She was fooling herself and wasting a lot of time and energy. A simple decision was required. Either decide coffee is fine or that it is not. Behave accordingly.

Do you have any of these crooked-thinking habits? Are you pretending—especially to yourself—that you want to go in one direction while your behavior is definitely going in another? It’s very common. Good intentions make great conversation and we feel better about ourselves while making it! We create our own hell by becoming impostors!

Sure, the coffee story seems harmless enough, but, it’s a simple example. Lying to ourselves is a travesty. (No, it’s not fibbing, telling a little white lie or stretching the truth. It’s simply lying!) We need to be able to trust ourselves. Living in alignment with what we say we believe is a wonderful way to steer clear of the anxiety, fear and chaos that living a double life creates.

Where could you improve the alignment between your beliefs and your behavior? Your behavior really demonstrates your belief–even about drinking coffee!
